Fabrum operate the largest waterjet profiling company in New Zealand. We operate two waterjet profiling machines, including a 5-axis machine. This machine is software-controlled making it able to cut severe angles from 0 to 60 degrees off the vertical. It is exceptionally accurate and economical with a tool path of +/-0.1 millimetre per metre.

Waterjet profiling does not distort or heat materials, delivering greater accuracy and better results than products that are milled, laser cut or cut using press tools.

Waterjet profiling also eliminates the need for secondary machining and grinding for fabrication processes, making it ideal for common welding projects.
Fabrum Solutions offers a fast turn-around that is generally no more than a couple of days and often the same day for smaller projects.

We specialise in non-ferrous metals, ceramics, plastics and packaging. Our 5-axis waterjet profiling machine is capable of cutting the following materials:

Metals

MetalsWe are the leading supplier of profiled aluminium plate in the South Island. We stock a range of Aluminium, Stainless, and Steel, as well as Titanium, Copper, and Brass, from which we supply complex profiles or simple rectangles. Our waterjet cutting system uses pressures of up to 60,000 psi, and a cutting “beam” diameter as small as 0.5mm to provide a detailed and accurate cut.

Foam/Packaging

FoamWaterjet cutting can provide detailed shapes with no distortion, from a variety of foams, with our 0.1mm cutting head allowing close nesting of parts. This allows us to provide great looking and economical foam shapes for packaging, display cases, etc.

Ceramics and Stone

Ceramics-and-StoneWaterjet cutting can be used to cut highly complex shapes and to cut simple shapes with a repeatable, high precision. We have the ability to provide neater cuts for fitting tiles around corners or objects, or to create personalised mosaics, from simple inserts in the centre of a tile to more complex patterns.

All types of porcelain, marble, granite and stone can be cut with no chipping. The cut surface is ideal for polishing or gluing.

Plastics and Glass

PlasticsWaterjet cutting cuts any material without burning, melting or shattering it. There are no noxious gases and the process is fast, neat and versatile.

This makes it possible to profile plastics and glass that otherwise would have to be cut using a more expensive, traditional process. The close nesting ability also has the potential to save material costs.

Gaskets

GasketsWaterjet cutting of rubber with our 0.1mm cutting head allows for the economic production of gaskets from thick or thin material. Our systems provide very small to very large gaskets with tight engineering tolerances, straight from a computer drawing. Or we can take a pattern and reverse engineer it. The close nesting ability also has the potential to save material cost.

We can cut gaskets for industrial, automotive (excluding head gaskets), or marine applications – all manufactured to order. We can cut gaskets from:

Gaskets can be produced from samples, drawings or templates. The data is then recorded for future.

Composites

CompositesWaterjet cutting is the premier system for the cutting of composite materials, considered superior to handheld or CNC routers. It will not fracture the cut edge and leaves a clean surface, with no ‘hairy’ fibres showing.

Our two dimensional cutting table is ideally suited for:

  • precision profiling of parts from flat sheet
  • ‘drilling’ holes in flanges or similar parts
  • precise trimming of parts with a plane edge
  • cutting of cured carbon fibre and Kevlar

Our waterjet cutting machine can cut a wide range of materials including wood, glues, MDF and perforated materials.

WATERJET PROFILING CASE STUDIES

Hamilton Jet


Hamilton JetFabrum Solutions assists Hamilton Jet with their production programme by optimising procured metal stock directly from the mill and “nesting” profiled parts to work out the best dimensions of plate sizes, resulting in reduced waste and costs. We also use CNC milling to reduce the total cost of production.

Fabrum also performs post-profiling operations, including bending, drilling, machining, tapping, engraving and welding; delivering Hamilton Jet weld-ready assembly kits inline with their production plan.

Fabrum tracks the origins of all materials and provides full international certification. Fabrum assists Hamilton Jet to get better yields, turnaround and ultimate results.

HTS - 110


HTS - 110The development of complex products often requires sourcing and developing a variety of materials into components that require intergration into final systems. When materials are handled by multiple suppliers this can lead to misaligned tolerances, extended production timeframes and development cycles (for low volume production runs) and an inability to clearly envisage the final system.

Fabrum provides an integrated manufacturing solutions, from the procurement of unique materials imported directly from offshore mills through to cutting profiles on the waterjet, with additional processes such as machining and bending. As Fabrum produces complete components, the quality of the product is ensured.

Cuddons


cuddonsCuddons develops large freeze dryers for a range of uses, including pharmaceuticals, food preservation and document recovery. Historically, these units were labour-intensive.

Fabrum Solutions worked with Cuddons to reduce cost and lead times on unit manufacture. This was achieved through reorganising the production process to maximise automation, and the application of 5-axis waterjet profiling technology to minimise downstream manual operations. Fabrum pre-polished the large stainless steel plates to food quality standard, and subsequently completed all profiling and penetrations prior to Cuddons rolling the pressure vessels.

Mercer Stainless


Mercer StainlessMercer Stainless design and fabricate high quality stainless steel and plant equipment in New Zealand and Australia. They manufacture a wide variety of machinery and bulk materials handling systems. This example is a cell plate for a milk powder plant, which has six hundred precision holes in a 5.2m diameter disc.

Fabrum can handle small to large plate projects on its high precision 5-axis waterjet. Handling of non-ferrous plate is achieved in its 1200m2 production facility with the use of overhead gantry and suction rigs.
