Fabrum is an innovative world leader in the design, development and manufacture of composite cryostats, including internal hardware and cryocoolers for the cryogenic and superconducting industries.

We have demonstrated expertise and success in the cryogenic and superconducting industries by developing the world’s first superconducting YBCO Roebel cable transformer for Industrial Research Limited in New Zealand. Fabrum Solutions also manufactured the world’s first AC HTS magnet.

We have developed manufacturing techniques to build specialist composite cryostats, and associated internal hardware suitable for applications where low weight or low electrical conductivity is required. These products are built to operate with liquid nitrogen and liquid helium systems from 77K to 4K.

Fabrum manufacture the PTC330 and PTC1000 cryocoolers that utilise patented diaphragm pressure wave generator technology (DPWG) and linear pulse tubes for condensing and re-liquefying cryogenic gases. These units are ideally suited to industrial applications for HTS, LNG and industrial gas liquefaction.

Fabrum designs and manufactures “full” cryogenic cooling systems for application in power systems and medical imaging.

Additionally, we supply liquid nitrogen baths and test equipment for checking superconducting tape and cable.

CRYOGENIC SOLUTIONS CASE STUDIES

1 MVA 11kV/415V HTS Transformer


1 MVA 11 volt/415 volt HTS three-phase demonstration transformer using 2G-HTS Roebel cable The cryostat and associated internal transformer hardware were designed and manufactured by Fabrum Solutions for Callaghan Innovation. The cryostat is glass-fibre, G10 constructed with glass microsphere insulation operating in a<10-3millibar vacuum. It operates at 70K cooled using liquid nitrogen.

The transformer incorporates three separate composite cryostats and utilises an eccentric design to reduce transformer size. It contains 80L of liquid nitrogen per cryostat.

28 MVA Fault Current Limiting (FCL) HTS Transformer


28 MVA Fault Current Limiting (FCL) HTS TransformerFabrum designed, developed and fabricated a single phase device for use in a69kv/12.47kV fault current limiting (FCL) HTS transformer for the U.S. Department of Energy, Smart Grid Initiative.

This was followed by the design and fabrication of a fully functioning prototype three-phase device in a single cryostat for installation, integration and commissioning on the Southern California Edison’s MacArthur Substation in Irvine, California. The device is designed to contain 10,000 litres of liquid nitrogen as a cryogenic cooling liquidat a pressure of 1 bar gauge.

Cryogenic Coolers


Cryogenic CoolersFabrum Solutions manufactures and supplies cryocoolers for industrial applications utilising a standard electric motor and a simple drive mechanism to ensure service intervals of 50,000 hours between major overhauls.

Cryocoolers are 470 watts and 1250 watts cooling output at 77K. These units utilise a high-efficiency linear pulse tube technology. The core technology is the pressure wave generator, which hermetically separates the working space from the pulse tube gas space, ensuring long operating periods between major services, and allows easy access for preventative maintenance without disturbing the clean gas circuit. The cryocoolers are designed as coolers for HTS systems (cables, fault current limiters, transformers, motors, generators and MRI) as well as liquefiers and re-condensers for industrial gases such as nitrogen, oxygen and methane.

Dewar Automatique


Superconducting HomopoleFabrum Solutions worked with a European clients to redesign and manufacture a complete automatic cryogenic system for use with robotic loading in a beam line sampling system, All cryostat components and internal hardware were manufactured by Fabrum to very high tolerances utilising thin walled composite cryostat technologies combining vacuum spaces and low heat conductivity solutions.
